You can use iPhone Cellular Calls with any Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that meets the Continuity system requirements. It works when your devices are near each other and set up as follows:
- Each device is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID.
- Each device is signed in to FaceTime with the same Apple ID.
- Each device has Wi-Fi turned on.

Make a call on your Mac
- Move the pointer over any phone number in Contacts, Calendar, Safari, or other app that automatically detects such data. Click the arrow in the box that outlines the phone number, then choose Call [phone number] Using iPhone.
- Or open the FaceTime app, enter a phone number in the search field, then click Audio.

There’s no doubt that Facebook and WhatsApp are two of the most popular platforms that can also make international calls. Facebook has about 1.3 billion members by the last count, and WhatsApp has about 1.5 billion. Because of that, there’s a good chance that your call recipient has an account.
Both WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger let you send messages to each other over an internet connection, as well as make voice or video calls.
Both apps are also widely available across different platforms, including both iOS and Android. Before moving on to any other app, it’s a good idea to check these two first.

FaceTime
Depending on who you’re trying to call, you may not even need to download a third-party app to make an international phone call. Apple’s own FaceTime service lets you make calls to other Apple devices free of charge, as long as you have a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.
Of course, the only downside is that the call recipient needs to also have an Apple device. Luckily, there are several that support it, including iPhones, iPads, iPod touches and Macs. And while FaceTime is famous for its video-calling, keep in mind that you can make audio-only calls as well.
Skype
When it comes to internet calling, Skype is probably one of the first apps that come to mind. It was widely used back in the day but has lost some ground to newer apps like WhatsApp or FaceTim. Despite that, it’s still a solid choice for making free internet-based phone calls across borders.
One of the important things to keep in mind is that you’ll only be able to make calls to another Skype user for free.
If you want to call a cellular number or a landline, it’ll actually cost you. The invite process is also a bit clunky, and the platform may require that you download an app that you don’t already have on your devices.

Need to make an international call to a landline or someone without a particular app? Consider LINE. Sort of a mix between a social media platform and a messaging app, and incredibly popular in Asia, LINE lets you make free global calls and texts. That means you can communicate with just about any international number, even if they don’t have a LINE account.
There are some limits to that free calling, however. U.S. users, for example, can make phone calls up to 5 minutes without any charge after watching a brief ad. After that, you’ll be charged a flat rate that’s comparatively low. Just something to keep in mind.

Perhaps not quite as well-known as WhatsApp, Viber is still a popular choice for cross-platform and international communications with more than 1 billion users.
