FIFA 21 was released last Friday, which means that the majority of football fans were spending the previous weekend learning all about the game. There are a lot of things to like about the latest release, but there are some of the same recurring problems that were deafening in the previous edition of the title.
FIFA 21 was released worldwide on 9 October 2020 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The Switch version is a 'Legacy Edition', with updated kits, rosters, and minor updates, but does not include 'new game modes or gameplay innovations'. While FIFA 21’s Ultimate Team mode starts you out with a few different customization options, there are a handful of things you can only do a bit down the line. Changing kits is one of those. While Juventus are not officially in FIFA 21, it is in appearance only - EA Sports says 'generic kits and crests' are used. Real-world players, including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul.
There are also some other problems that we found while playing the game, and it will be interesting to see whether these are amended with the upcoming software update.
FIFA 21: Kits Missing
The first thing that we noticed before even playing a match on the game was the absence of some kits. As a Manchester United fan, I was quick to discover that this season’s third kit is mysteriously missing from the game this season.
Meanwhile, the Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion third kits are also missing. There could actually be a very simple explanation for this however, as the current coronavirus pandemic resulted in both kits being released later than expected. That means that all three third kits for the teams could be updated in the game when there is a software update soon.
FIFA 21: The Art Of Defending
You would be forgiven for thinking that the art of defending has long left the beautiful game in real life after seeing the Premier League results throughout the season. And, it’s fair to say that FIFA has been using the recent Manchester United and Liverpool defending as their template for this game.
Defending in FIFA 21 isn’t easy, as attacking players are easily able to dribble past their opponents. It is much more difficult to defend in this year’s game, which means that those that struggled in FIFA 20 will likely have nightmares. Coupled with that is the issue that it is too easy to score, which means games finished 6-3 aren’t a rarity in FIFA 21 this season.

There are certain parts of the real game that fans don’t miss, with the obvious one being VAR being omitted from the game. However, the biggest strength for FIFA throughout its period of dominance has been that it is the only game with every major team being licensed. That dominance was broken last season as Juventus were exclusive to PES, and that is the same this season.
Meanwhile, AS Roma are also no longer in FIFA, which means that a damaging trend could be emerging. FIFA makes up for this with beautiful visuals for AC and Inter Milan, but the omissions of two of the biggest teams in Italy does hurt FIFA 21.
