Make sure there is only one version of the Scala library on your classpath, and that it matches the version provided by Scala IDE. The prime suspect is Maven Dependencies, which can download and add an incompatible scala-library.jar. The classpath validator added in Scala IDE 2.0.0 should detect this problem and provide meaningful problem markers. Sep 06, 2013.

As mentioned in Chapter 1.2, O1’s official programming environment is the Eclipse IDEand its Scala IDE plugin, which are installed on Aalto IT’s Linux workstations.

If you want to use Eclipse and Scala IDE on your personal computer, you’ll first needto install them. These tools are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The newer youroperating system, the less likely it is you’ll run into trouble installing the tools.

Version numbers matter!

Any tools you use in O1 should be compatible with version 2.12.6of the Scala programming language. Officially, we use version4.7 Oxygen of Eclipse and version 4.7 of Scala IDE. You’llalso need a Java toolkit (JDK); the recommended version is 8.

Follow the instructions below to install the appropriate versions. First, select youroperating system:

Windows

Step 1 of 4: Install Java

  2. Install the software simply by executing the downloaded file andagreeing when the installer asks you to approve what it's doing.

Troubleshooting: “I launched Eclipse but just got a long error message.”

If that happens, the probable cause is that you’ve installeda 64-bit version of Scala IDE but have a 32-bit version of Java,or the other way around. Please use a modern 64-bit operatingsystem and 64-bit versions of all the required tools.

Step 4 of 4: Adjust settings

Weeks 1 to 13 of the ebook, including the assignments and weekly bulletins, have beenwritten in Finnish and translated into English by Juha Sorva.

Weeks 14 to 20 are by Otto Seppälä. That part of the ebook isn’t available during thefall term, but we’ll publish it when it’s time.

The appendices (glossary, Scala reference,FAQ, etc.) are by Juha Sorva unless otherwise specified on the page.

The automatic assessment of the assignments has been developed by: (in alphabetical order)Riku Autio, Nikolas Drosdek, Joonatan Honkamaa, Jaakko Kantojärvi, Niklas Kröger, TeemuLehtinen, Strasdosky Otewa, Timi Seppälä, Teemu Sirkiä, and Aleksi Vartiainen.

The illustrations at the top of each chapter, and the similar drawings elsewhere in theebook, are the work of Christina Lassheikki.

The animations that detail the execution Scala programs have been designed by Juha Sorva andTeemu Sirkiä. Teemu Sirkiä and Riku Autio have done the technical implementation, relying onTeemu’s Jsvee and Kelmutoolkits.

The other diagrams and interactive presentations in the ebook are by Juha Sorva.

The O1Library softwarehas been developed by Aleksi Lukkarinen and Juha Sorva. Several of its key componentsare built upon Aleksi’s SMCLlibrary.

The pedagogy behind O1Library’s tools for simple graphical programming (such as Pic)is inspired by the textbooks How to Design Programs by Flatt, Felleisen, Findler, andKrishnamurthi and Picturing Programs by Stephen Bloch.

The course platform A+ has been created byAalto’s LeTech research group and is largelydeveloped by students. The current lead developer is Jaakko Kantojärvi; many otherstudents of computer science and information networks are also active on the project.

For O1’s current teaching staff, please see Chapter 1.1.

The integrated development environment Eclipse is a powerful tool for computer programming. It features the base workshop as well as extensive plugin support, letting you customize the environment to your tastes.

Get to coding!

Work anywhere thanks to Eclipse’s cloud-based feature that shares your projects to the cloud.

Developed in Java with its main focus being Java, you’re able to code in a variety of languages such as Ada, C, C++, COBOL, Fortran, D, JavaScript, Groovy, Erlang, Haskell, Julia, Lau, Lasso, Python, Ruby, and many more languages thanks to the multitude of plugins available. Expanding upon coding uses, you’re also capable of using Eclipse to develop documents for LaTeX, and create packages for Mathematica.

Eclipse is open source and free, which means that you get frequent updates, many versions with unique features to choose from and a wide variety of plugins. This also means you’re fully capable of taking Eclipse’s code and developing an IDE that suits your personal needs, all while coding within Eclipse itself.

Projects created within Eclipse are easy to maintain and keep secure. However, if you are sharing your computer, other users may be able to access your projects.

Eclipse is great if you’re trying to learn a new programming language, especially if you already know one as you won’t need to install a secondary IDE for that language. To find the new plugin you need for the next language you’re learning, simply use Eclipse’s marketplace. The marketplace has thousands of plugins and tools that are ready to be installed.
